Activities in Charleston
For an overview of all things Charlestonian please visit the Charleston Visitor's Bureau
What to do?
Carriage Tours: If this is your first time in Charleston, there's no better introduction to its history and charm than a carriage tour. There are many carriage companies in Charleston, but we recommend Palmetto Carriage Company or Carolina Polo and Carriage Company
Charleston is the home of the one of the finest aquariums in the nation, the South Carolina Aquarium. The deep ocean tank and the deck overlooking the Cooper River are both awe inspiring and gorgeous!
Did you know that Charleston is one of the most haunted cities in America? It's true! Walking Ghost Tours are offered every night of the week in the downtown area. Bulldog Tours is one of the most reputable companies offering this service, as well as non-haunted walking tours. (If you do decide to participate in a ghost tour, please contact Adam or Amanda first as we are trying to put a private tour together)
Where to eat?
You might not know this, but Charleston is a culinary heaven. You can get a little bit of everything here, from deep fried Southern comfort to European inspired haute cuisine. Just don’t eat too much- we’ve got a helluva dinner planned for you at the reception.
A visit to Charleston is simply not complete without a trip to the famed Jestine's Kitchen. This is THE place to get fried chicken or homemade meatloaf. Save some room for dessert and try the Coca-Cola cake. There's no website for Jestine's, but they are located downtown at the corners of Meeting & Wentworth Streets.
For a little bit more upscale experience, Poogan's Porch is the place to go. A charming single family house turned restaurant, Poogan's serves good southern food and simply to-die-for biscuits. Oh, and speaking of to-die-for, ask about their ghost- they'll be happy to share their spooky stories.
Looking for something other than deep fried Southern comfort food? Try Basil Restaurant up on King Street. Their Thai food is both delicious and affordable.
While it's not downtown, it's worth the trip over the river to have a lunch or dinner at Blue Rose Café out in West Ashley. Owner Denis came all the way from Ireland to open this charming spot- and no one sings Danny Boy quite as well as he does! (And he will, right in the middle of the dining floor if the mood hits him.) No website, but here's the address: 652 Saint Andrews Blvd.
